US County Area is an independent project operated by US County Area. We turn the Census Bureau’s county Gazetteer into accessible pages, rankings, comparisons, and downloadable data. Questions and corrections go to corrections@uscountyarea.com.
What we add
A source file is useful for analysis but awkward for a quick lookup. US County Area connects each record to state and national rankings, unit conversions, water percentages, a generalized county outline, and comparisons with other counties. Every county page links back to its source and includes a citation you can reuse.
Editorial standards
- Keep official measurements distinct from our calculations and illustrations.
- Publish the source vintage, retrieval date, and transformation rules.
- Explain which county equivalents are included before making comparisons.
- Correct transformation errors against the original source rather than replacing official measurements with unverified estimates.
- Review data releases before updating the pinned source; do not relabel an old dataset as a new one.
Corrections and maintenance
Report a discrepancy with the county’s GEOID, affected page, field, and source link. Data updates are checked for missing or duplicate identifiers, invalid measurements, ranking consistency, map coverage, and broken routes. Interactive search and comparison flows are tested in a browser.
Independence and funding
